He previously taught and coordinated music education at the University of
Toronto and has also taught as a Visiting Professor of Music Education at Indiana
University, Northwestern University, the University of Cape Town, the University
of North Texas and the Irish World Music Centre (University of Limerick).
A specialist in music education philosophy, Dr. Elliott teaches
graduate and undergraduate courses in music education foundations, music
cognition, research methods, music curriculum development and multicultural
music education.
In addition to Music Matters: A New Philosophy of Music Education,
he has contributed chapters to several other books including Cultural
Literacy and Arts Education, Winds of Change and Philosopher, Teacher,
Musician: Perspectives on Music Education.
He has published articles in many professional journals including
the International Journal of Music Education, the Bulletin of the Council
for Research in Music Education, the Journal of Aesthetic Education, the
Philosophy of Music Education Review, the British Journal of Music
Education, the Finnish Journal of Music Education, the Choral Journal and
the Journal of Music Teacher Education.
As a speaker, Dr. Elliott has presented keynote addresses, papers
and workshops at numerous conferences including meetings of the
International Society for Music Education and national music education
conferences in Australia, Canada, Japan, South Africa and the USA. He has
also presented guest lectures at many university music schools including
Arizona, Michigan, Maryland, Texas, Kentucky, Colorado, South Florida,
Oklahoma, Ithaca, Boston, Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban, Queen's (Belfast),
Trinity (Dublin), South Wales (Sydney), Jyvaskyla (Finland), Stockholm,
London and the Sibelius Academy of Music (Helsinki).
As a musician, David J. Elliott is an active performer and an
award-winning composer/arranger who has several choral and instrumental
works in publication with Boosey and Hawkes (New York).
