These reflections are based mainly on the praxial philosophy of music education I explain in Music Matters: A New Philosophy of Music Education (New York: Oxford University Press, 1995).

Background

I've built this site in response to questions and ideas received from music students, musicians, music educators and researchers around the world who want to discuss:

WHY music education matters;
WHAT is most important for music students to learn;
HOW (in general terms) music education ought to be carried out;
What the praxial philosophy of music education says about these and other issues; and
Criticisms of the praxial philosophy of music education and other philosophies.
